This activity was designed to meet the Australian Curriculum: (as at 5/2016)

This activity focus's on the green highlighted sections.

Design and Technologies Knowledge and Understanding content description:

Investigate characteristics and properties of a range of materials, systems, components, tools and equipment and evaluate the impact of their use (ACTDEK023)

Complimentary Design and Technologies Processes and Production Skills content description:

Critique needs or opportunities for designing, and investigate materials, components, tools, equipment and processes to achieve intended designed solutions (ACTDEP024)

ICT General Capability

This activity provides students with the opportunity to develop and apply ICT knowledge and skills when investigating. Students use an ICT to effectively access information and solve problems.

Students develop an understanding of the characteristics of data and apply this when they investigate. Students learn to logically organise and analyse data.

Critial and Creative Thinking General Capability

This activity allows students to develop their capability in critical and creative thinking as they learn to critically evaluate knowledge, seek possibilities, consider alternatives and solve problems. They are required to be imaginative and innovative in their design outcome. They consider how materials, tools and equipment (past and present) impact on our lives, and how these elements might be better designed and managed.

The activity offers differentiation; for those students that require additional support, the Design Brief layout and headings provided within it can be enhanced and for those students working at an above average ability, an extension could be that they provide information on where the material can be sourced.

The activity will further develop students’ investigation skills as they research the characteristics of various materials currently available to build a bicycle. Evaluation and critique of available materials, taking into account the intended use of their bike will be essential, as will their choice of material.

This activity would link to Year 5 English: Language: Text structure and organisation (ACELA1504). As the students become familiar with the purpose of a Design Brief, they will learn it’s structure and how formal it would need to be depending on the audience.

Below are word versions of the PDF documents available within this activity. Please feel free to alter them to suit your needs.
